I was fortunate enough to grow up in a rural mid-Michigan town that offered many opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. Hunting and fishing trips and family vacations throughout the U.S. and Canada sparked my interest in traveling and the pursuit of unique experiences in the outdoors. In high school I hosted an outdoor television show and worked at several sporting goods stores before heading an hour south to East Lansing and Michigan State University (GO GREEN!).

During my senior year at MSU I conducted fieldwork with a team of talented scientists investigating the risks of PCB-contamination in a southwestern MI river system. This job and my interest in the welfare of the environment got me started in the field of ecotoxicology and led to employment with an environmental consulting firm. Graduate school had always been a goal of mine and I jumped at the chance to work with Dr. William Hopkins at the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory. For my master’s work I’m examining the effects of malathion and Pb (neurotoxicants) on the locomotor performance of the western fence lizard (Sceloporus occidentalis).
