Sigma Xi Awards Graduate Students

B. Gerber

The Virginia Tech chapter of Sigma Xi, a multidisciplinary research society, with support from the Virginia Tech Office of Research, presented awards to two students from the College of Natural Resources. Award recipients were selected on the basis of their academic history, research accomplishments, research proposal, and a letter of support from the student’s research advisor. Sigma Xi and the Office of Research provide assistance for students to advance their research opportunities.

Fisheries and wildlife sciences student Brian Gerber received a Sigma Xi Graduate Award for Master’s Degree Candidates. Gerber’s research focuses on the development of programs for the conservation and management of resources in the rainforests of Madagascar and the protection of rainforest carnivores and their lemur prey. Gerber was also awarded the John Memorial M.S. Research Award by Sigma Xi.

Nabin Baral, a forestry major, received a Sigma Xi Research Award for Ph.D. Degree Candidates. The focus of Baral’s research is determining the institutional resilience of community-based conservation in the face of the Maoist insurgency in Nepal. Both students were also awarded a one-year membership in the society.
